Boredom is a huge eating trigger for many people. Being stuck inside on a snowy day can drive us to nosh all day long, adding inches to our waistlines! So here are a few ideas to keep you busy doing something else! Note that several of these ideas require some planning ahead, as you need to have supplies on hand to get started. So pick the ones that appeal to you and get the things you need before you get stuck at home!
Clean out a closet you’ve been meaning to reorganize, and take any unwanted items to Goodwill or the Salvation Army or a local church. Clean out your “junk room” and turn it into that cute guest room you’ve always wanted. This could even lead to a shopping trip, for a new bedspread and drapes, a new lamp, some nice scented candles-who knows!
Start organizing your income tax records. It may not be fun, but it’s a whole lot better to do it when you have time to think instead of when you’re under the gun! Add up charitable donations, make sure your business records are in order, and make a list of anything you’re missing so you have time to find it before you really need it.
Scrap booking is becoming a national pastime! You can even buy books on how to do it. Get those holiday photos out and have some fun!
Do you like to write? Composing short articles to post on the web is fun. And if you want to drive people to your personal or business website, your bio can help. Decide on a topic you have knowledge of, but want to learn even more about. The research process is fun and can consume some extra time. And you just might learn something valuable!
Paint a room (or more than one!) Some new colors, wallpaper or borders, and some new accents could help lift winter blues! (Again, supplies need to be on hand! Plan ahead.)
Take dance lessons! Ballroom dancing, tap dancing, belly dancing-whatever you like! Dancing is a wonderful hobby because you get exercise while having fun. You can start teaching yourself with videos at home, without the embarrassment of other people watching, and practice as long as you want. If you decide you like it, find a place to take lessons when you can get out again! You can make new friends and even get really involved in competitions, exhibitions, etc. Who knows, maybe you’ll love it so much you’ll become an instructor yourself! Order those videos now!
Learn a craft such as knitting, crocheting, quilting, embroidery, needlepoint, etc. Keeping your hands busy with crafts will keep you out of the refrigerator.
Do you have musical talent? Learn an instrument, or get back into playing one you haven’t touched in a while. Just try not to practice to the point of driving away your family!
Light some candles, put on some soft music, and sink into a nice hot bubble bath. C’mon, you know you love it! Can you even remember the last time you indulged in it?
Have you ever thought about building a house? There are literally thousands of floor plans available on the web. You can spend hours refining your search, looking at interesting plans and getting ideas. It might inspire you to make that dream come true!
I hope having some of these ideas in your head and getting the supplies in order will help keep you occupied, keep you out of the refrigerator and cupboards, lift away winter doldrums, and maybe even open some new doors for future adventures. Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow! We’ve got plenty to do inside!

It's made from four 3-1/2-inch Bear's Paw quilt blocks that are surrounded by cornerstones and pieced sashing. A dark inner border and a floral outer border complete the little quilt. Everything is quick and strip-pieced. Half square triangle units used in blocks finish at 1/2", but you can make them perfectly every time but assembling the units slightly larger than necessary and then cutting each one back to the exact size before sewing. Permalink | Comment | Email this Summertime Baskets Block in Two Sizes: 20" and 10" I love it when the native plants are blooming like crazy and blossoms and fruit are in motion. And it's an incredible sight to gaze out across the Blue Ridge Mountains in the spring to watch the progression of green as it moves higher in elevation. I call that progress greening up the mountain, and have thought forever that the theme would make a good landscape quilt. I even started a miniature version years ago in a class with Jo Diggs, and rediscovered the project awhile back when we unpacked some boxes. Now I just have to find the time to work on it. Spring and summer always brings out the basket blocks, too. This version is in the deeper colors of summer, but would work well with any theme. I think it would be lovely sewn with solid fabrics in the Amish tradition, even if you decide to add some reds and other zesty colors we don't typically see in traditional Amish quilts. I've included instructions for two blocks sizes, a 20" and a 10". Choose whichever works for you. The light fabric that surrounds the stars blends with the pictorial angel fabric used in the center of the snowball blocks, giving the snowballs an on-point appearance even though all blocks are sewn together side by side. The list includes blocks and quilts in a range of sizes, starting at 6" square (you'll find a few options for smaller blocks) and moving upwards. Star blocks are the perfect starting point for holiday quilts -- just change the fabrics to make any pattern to suit your needs. Star quilts are often made up of half square triangle units, a popular quilting component that you'll encounter often. The Domino quilt block pattern includes instructions for making a single quilt block, for those of you who like to go scrappy, plus directions for 20-strip pieced Dominos. The 20 blocks can be used in the Domino baby quilt shown on page 4 of the pattern, or in another quilt of your own design. Before beginning, new quilters should make sure they're okay with sewing a quarter inch seam and with rotary cutting long strips of fabric. Some of the blocks feature applique motifs, but you can eliminate the applique if you wish, or use one of my easy suggestions to simplify construction while still adding a bit of variety to the windows. Use different colors to create your own unique theme, and sew fewer or more blocks to alter its finished size. Setting-in is not a difficult method -- do give it a try. I've included a quilt layout suggestion (along with yardages and extra instructions, of course) and drawings that illustrate value variations. Greek Cross is such a simple block, but it can be either traditional or dramatic, depending on your fabric choices.
